Water Launch Party

Celebrate the 40th issue of the LARB Quarterly and the end of the elemental year with the launch of Water. In this milestone issue, our writers, artists, and poets use water as a prism through which we can more clearly see our human habits and the planet they destroy. 

Join us on February 3 at Human Resources in Chinatown for a night of readings, music, drinks, and celebrating. Featuring readings from LARB contributing writers Jessica Abughattas, Dorie Chevlen, Elaine Kahn, Fariha Roísín, and Benjamin Weissman, and a special solo set from Hand Habits. Flash tattoos from artist Li Sanchez will be available on a sliding scale!

About the artists

Jessica Abughattas is the author of Strip (University of Arkansas), which won the 2020 Etel Adnan Poetry Prize selected by Fady Joudah and Hayan Charara. Her poems appear in Guernica, The Yale Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, and elsewhere. She is a Kundiman Fellow and co-chair for Southern California Kundiman. 

Dorie Chevlen is a journalist and screenwriter based in Los Angeles. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and Slate, among other publications. 

Elaine Kahn is a writer and artist currently based in Los Angeles. She is author of Women in Public (City Lights, 2015) and Romance or The End (Soft Skull, 2020). She holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a BFA from California College of the Arts. She teaches at the Poetry Field School. 

Fariha Róisín is the author of How To Cure a Ghost, Like a Bird, Who Is Wellness For? and most recently, Survival Takes a Wild Imagination. She lives and dreams in Los Angeles. 

Benjamin Weissman is the author of two books of short fiction, most recently Headless. He teaches Advance Drawing at UCLA. An exhibition of his artwork, in conjunction with Paul McCarthy, opens at The Pit in Atwater, California on February 24, 2024

Meg Duffy is a multi-instrumentalist who fronts their songwriting project Hand Habits, is one half of experimental project Yes/And, is one half of guitar duo Duffy x Uhlmann, and is a touring guitarist in Perfume Genius. They live in Los Angeles.
