João Florêncio

João Florêncio is senior lecturer in History of Modern and Contemporary Art and Visual Culture at the University of Exeter, researching visual cultures of the body, sexuality, health, disease, and Nature. At Exeter, he coordinates the Exeter Masculinities Research Unit, is a member of the Sexual Knowledge Research Unit, and an affiliated researcher of the Centre for Medical History. As a Leadership Fellow of the Arts and Humanities Research Council between 2019 and 2021, he has researched and theorized the emergence of contemporary gay “pig” masculinities and how they developed alongside the introduction of antiretroviral therapies for the management and prophylaxis of HIV, the affordances of online porn, and new patterns of sexualized recreational drug use among gay men. He is the author of Bareback Porn, Porous Masculinities, Queer Futures: The Ethics of Becoming-Pig (Routledge, 2020).
